Part 2: The 5 Steps to Creating Your Market Dominating Position

Last time, we talked about why blending in is the fastest way to lose ground to competitors — and why a clear Market Dominating Position is what separates businesses that thrive from businesses that just get by. Now let's get practical. Here are the five steps to define yours.

  1. Determine Your Strategic Position
Start by identifying the specific niche or customer segment where you're strongest. Where do your skills and strengths overlap with a need your ideal customers aren't getting met anywhere else? That overlap is your starting point.

  2. Identify Your Primary Market Dominating Position
What's the single biggest advantage you offer? Domino's chose speed. Nike chose performance and style. What's the one "must-have" benefit that your business delivers better than anyone else in your market?

  3. Build Your Supporting Business Model
A promise is only as good as your ability to deliver it consistently. This step is about looking honestly at your operations, staffing, and processes and asking: does how we actually run the business support the promise we're making? If not, something needs to change.

  4. Add a Secondary Market Dominating Position
Once your primary advantage is locked in, look for a secondary layer that deepens your edge — special pricing, added convenience, a unique service most competitors don't offer. This is what turns "good" into "impossible to walk away from."

  5. Craft Your Market Dominating Position Statement
Bring it all together into one clear, compelling sentence — your elevator pitch. Something like: "Fresh, hot pizza delivered in 30 minutes or less, or it's free." Simple, specific, and impossible to confuse with anyone else.

If you had to sum up your business's unique value in one sentence right now, what would it be? That single sentence is often the difference between a business that's constantly chasing customers and one that customers come looking for.
